Guides or wheels should be installed on sucker rod string in directional wells, in order to avoid rod's direct contacting with tubing. Consequently, the analysis of sucker rod string is complicated, being very different from the analysis of sucker rod string in conventional vertical wells. This paper is aimed at the analysis of sucker rod string in inclined-wells in quasistatic condition, by applying the theory of continuous beam columns, providing preparation for the design of sucker rod string in inclined wells.
Sucker rod pumping han been the main method of artificial lifting for a long time. Statics shows that almost above 90 percent of artificial lifting wells are applying sucker rod pumping units. Recently, sucker rod pumping has been used in directional wells with the development of directional drilling technology. Generally, directional wells can increase production power because of improving flow characteristics, lengthening tubing's contact with recovery zones. Sucker rod system pumping has been used in directional wells in the recovery of dense oil, heavy oil or some other directional wells after a period of recovery.
Guides or wheels should be installed on couplings along sucker rod string in order to avoid rod's direct contact with tubing because of the deviation of well trajectory. Therefore, sliding friction between rod and tubing is changed into rolling friction, avoiding the wear of rod string and tubing, decreasing polished rod load. The deviation of well hole (The real well trajectory is three dimensional), and the guides or wheels along sucker rod string make the analysis of sucker rod string very complicated.
The analysis and design of sucker rod string in conventional vertical wells has been discussed completely.
