Process safety differs from personnel safety and has to be dealt differently. Personnel safety deals with injuries that a worker can suffer while doing his job, such as burns, cuts, strains, and fume exposure, while process safety starts with failure of an equipment or system to perform its intended function, thus leading to catastrophic fires, explosions, and toxic releases. Process safety incidents have the potential to kill or injure many workers and even neighbors of the facility and can even lead to long term or permanent shut down of a processing facility.
