Wellbore friction, torque, and drag between the drill string and wellbore walls are generally critical issues which limit the drilling industry to go beyond a certain angle and depth in highly deviated, horizontal and extended reach wells. It may result in complex drilling problems like stuck pipe, hole deviation, borehole instability and non-homogenous formations problems leading to increased non-productive time. An analytical model being used to estimate the influence of drilling assembly friction against the well bore profile which provides an understanding of the downhole conditions as well as in realizing the effect of its underlying parameters. This leads the E&P companies to use cost-effective solutions to predict and mitigate the issues in a timely manner to optimize drilling operations constituting huge potential cost saving.
Considering the drilling operations in Saudi Arabia, a web-based, user-friendly and customizable solution was provided to drilling engineers and rig foremen for comparative monitoring of real-time (torque and drag) against a pre-drilled model. The effectiveness of this technique to optimize the rig site operation has been demonstrated on a good number of jobs, both onshore and offshore wells, and validated with the assistance of Saudi Aramco Real-Time Operations Center (RTOC) engineers.
In this paper, a case study has been presented from an offshore well, where this technique has been applied. A real-time (torque and drag) modeling analysis is offered to observe and monitor actual vs. planned models in one single web base infrastructure. Results are compared, quick recommendations and alerts can be sent to the rig site to optimize drilling, tripping in, tripping out, back reaming, and rotating off bottom operations. At the same time adjustments can be made on the fly mode in plan models if required.
The approach is based upon the mechanism of setting up real-time (torque and drag) analysis from the data stream coming directly from the sensors on the rig site. The integrated plan modeling technique will allow the user to design the planned model and view the results on top of real-time models. This lets the engineer's advice the rig personnel of any anomalies, and allows them to quickly redesign the model so changes can be applied in the real-time environment. This is a highly modern and time-saving technique compared to the traditional workflow of setting up such analyses in the planning phase only
