DESCRIPTION Implementing digital oilfield concepts and realising value from their mainstream use can be challenging. The pace of change adoption enabled by remote operational monitoring, alert driven surveillance by exception, virtual collaboration, and real-time optimisation and decision support were initially slowed by financial risk issues: in a world where there were no relevant business cases, investments might have limited or uncertain pay off. Even after eight years of Intelligent Energy Conferences, IE maturity is clearly highly variable between and within organisations. APPLICATION The quest for answers to a wicked problem like what does it take to improve digital oilfield maturity- which is wicked because it is difficult or impossible to solve due changing and incomplete requirements- could lead to some interesting places. This paper suggests that some relevant lessons were built into the 1984 supernatural comedy film “Ghostbusters” that provide parallels to the issues of digital oilfield uptake arising from a new vision driven business model, unique technologies, customer engagement and change management challenges, demands for results in a world of complex operational decisions, all interacting in a political environment. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS * Digital oilfield implementation is a wicked problem. * The big crew change is impacting us now, with many of the people who have worked on DOFF implementation retiring and the intended customer base getting younger. Passing on learnings is important if we want to maintain the current levels of penetration. * We can gain insights from unexpected sources- the challenges faced by the fictional Ghostbusters distil practical lessons in DOFF implementation if we are open to learn from them. The lessons span: o Vision and tactics o Engagement and marketing o New infrastructure o Field Trials o Support expectations o Business case, business impacts and results o Politics in technology adoption
