Construction of 3D and 5D D-volumes in prestack domain

Seismic reflection and diffraction events convey complementary information of the geological subsurface. However, observed diffraction amplitudes are much smaller than ones observed in reflections. As such, diffractions remain, to a large extent, undetected behind reflections, which limits full use of the former in conventional processing. Therefore, we propose a stacking scheme that can simultaneously enhance diffractions and attenuate reflections in the prestack domain. Based on the finite-offset double-square-root (FO-DSR) traveltime operator, that scheme enables the construction of so-called diffraction-only prestack data volumes (or, just, D-volumes), which consist mainly of diffraction energy. The proposed scheme is tested to a 2D-acquisition (3D domain) marine and a 3D-acquisition (5D domain) land field datasets with many encouraging results.
