Salt-body interval velocity variation in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico

The deep-water areas of Keathley Canyon and Walker Ridge in the northern Gulf of Mexico contain alloch-thonous salt-bodies exhibiting interval velocities (Vint) that can vary between 5 and 25% from that of pure halite. These salt Vint also vary significantly with latitude. Composite medium modeling of mixed salt-body mineralogies and multiple regression analysis lead to the conclusion that this velocity variation can be explained by the lithological variation within the salt, which also varies by latitude. Five different Vint zones have been identified with each having specific associated mineralogies within a latitude range. These Vint are uncorrelated and insensitive to factors such as wellbore temperature, depth, and overburden pressure.
