A stable constraint for pseudoelastic anisotropic reverse time migration

Due to the acoustic approximation used in the derivation of pseudo-acoustic wave equations, conventional anisotropic RTM (VTI/TTI) requires the assumption that ɛ ≤δ to ensure numerical stability. This assumption works well for shale-dominant rocks, but often fails in carbonates which usually have the relation ɛ <δ. To overcome this limitation, instead of using the more expensive full elastic wave equation for depth imaging, this paper presents a new stable constraint on anisotropic parameters for pseudo-elastic RTM. The resulting shear-wave velocity ensures physical stability for the wave equation. Both analytical and elastic anisotropic solutions are used to verify the proposed method. The method is tested on 3D field datasets and the produced images show both horizontal and vertical 3D positioning shifts which are consistent with predicted values.
