ABSTRACT: This paper summarizes the simplification approaches applied to the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) used in modeling of field scale EGS and other unconventional reservoirs. The main objective of the DFN simplification processes is to preserve the properties of the rock mass, i.e., mechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties, while reducing the computational requirements. The numerical modeling approach discussed in this study is based on the discrete element technique in which the fractures are explicitly represented. A number of procedures are proposed. A case study is presented, and results, strengths and shortcomings of the proposed procedures are discussed.
