On Texaco's Tartan platform in Block 15/16 of the North Sea a crude oil treating facility has been installed to remove H2S from sour zone production and enable export to a sweet product terminal.
Selection and design of the gas stripping process is discussed together with mechanical design, control philosophy, material selection and safety considerations.
The conduct of the project is described and data presented on the performance of the unit and the efficiency of gas stripping.
Early appraisal wells drilled in the Tartan field during the mid 1970's identified a thin Jurassic sand lens above the main reservoir sequences. A test on this zone was aborted when H2S concentrations in excess of 50 ppm were detected at the bubble hose. At that time the North Sea was considered to be a "sweet" oil province and most of the testing equipment was unsuitable for sour service. The sour zone was felt to be untypical of Tartan and was not included in field development plans.
Crude and NGL from the Tartan platform are conveyed by pipeline to the occidental Claymore platform and thence into the main oil pipeline to the Flotta terminal. Fig. 1.
At Flotta the blend of offshore crudes is stabilised and overhead vapours pass to a gas treatment plant. The overhead products comprise fuel gas, an ethane-propane mix and commercial sweet propane.
Gas is exported from the platform into the Frigg gas system at the gathering platform, MCPO1.
